Kendra Ann Flournoy is a Detroit-bred multihyphenate artist: playwright, visual artist, producer, and arts administrator. Spirituality, Family, and Black Culture are her life sources. From these wells spring infinite inspiration. Every time she dips into these waters, she emerges with a new curiosity, a new truth, a new dream, a new piece of history. A new. A new. Anew… She aims to converge these three realms in her writing and offer up work that bring forth joy, healing, and transformative experiences.
Kendra has developed work in DrAW, Más Páginas, and at The Lark. Her plays have been featured in the Billie Holiday Theatre’s 2019 50in50 monologue showcase, The Black Lady Theatre’s 2019 Foundation: New Writings Series, and GPTC’s 2024 New Play Conference. In 2024, her play, Bambiland, was awarded Best New Script by Encore Michigan’s Wilde Awards. She was a 2024 recipient of Detroit Public Theatre’s TAG Residency and was a semi-finalist in the 2025 Seven Devils Playwrights Conference. She is a member of The Colony Theatre’s 2026-27 Writer’s Lab.
Kendra co-founded Face Off Theatre, a nonprofit theatre company in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She’s served on leadership teams for a number of theatre organizations including The Lark, Detroit Repertory Theatre, and the Ojai Playwrights Conference.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Master of Fine Arts degree in Playwriting from Western Michigan University.
